On the 21st of May 2017, Igor Iankovskyi Foundation, NGO “Initiative for the Future” and Helping Hand Monegasque Association jointly with Ukrainian State Film Agency have conducted a business-lunch event «Meet Ukrainian Producers!» for cinema industry professionals, for the second year in a row. The event generated great interest among cinema-makers, having gathered more than 80 international and Ukrainian cinema industry representatives at the panorama hall of the «Le 360» restaurant (Radisson Blu Cannes Hotel).
The gathering has been opened with welcoming words by Oleg Shamshur, the Ambassador of Ukraine in France, Pylyp Illienko, Head of the Ukrainian State Film Agency, and Igor Iankovskyi, patron of the Charity Foundation “Initiative for the Future”.
Presenting actual state of Ukrainian cinema industry and relevant legislative reforms, Pylyp Illienko, the Head of the Ukrainian State Film Agency, noted, that the State is constantly increasing its attention towards cinema industry development, notably by greatly enlarging the public expenses on national projects, starting this year. Due to this, Ukrainian cinema experiences its revival. It is significant, that two Ukrainian feature films at once have entered the official contest program and parallel contest of the anniversary 70th Cannes Film Festival. State cinema financing today is concerning more than 90 national projects, 51 of them are feature films. Pylyp Illienko invited international producers to join this movement.
“When five years ago my Foundation started to support national cinema and promote it abroad, we were almost alone to be interested in this. Few people could imagine then, that in several years this initiative would grow into powerful industry. I am so glad to see such spectacular developments in Ukrainian cinema. The number of sponsors eager to support our initiatives has grown significantly. For the first time we could reunite so many national companies in Cannes, organize truly united Ukrainian stand and conduct a range of events that respectably represent our cinema to the world market”, - underlined Igor Iankovskyi.
Eight Ukrainian feature films on the different production stages that are looking for international partners have been presented to attention of the business-lunch gathering.
Those films are: “The Bobot” (Mental dRive Studio), “Voroshylovgrad” (LIMELITE Company), “The Egregore” (Solar Media Entertainment), “Sentry Outpost” (KINOROB Company), «Quester & Max» (Pronto Film Company), “Toloka” (Illienko Films LLC), documentary “Panorama” (MaGika Film Company) and “Tera” (Modern Ukrainian Cinema Association).
Two latter projects were presented by young Ukrainian directors Yuriy Shylov and Nikon Romanchenko, who came to Cannes with the support of Iankovskyi Foundation along with four their colleagues from Modern Ukrainian Cinema Association. As it was last year, the new generation of Ukrainian cinema-makers is participating at the Short Film Corner section and demonstrating their projects at Marshé du Film. Notably they will present the following short films: “Condensed Milk” (by Kateryna Gornostai), “Interval” (by Nikon Romanchenko), “Nail” (by Filip Sotnychenko), “Blood” (by Valeriya Sochyvets), “Panorama” (by Yuriy Shylov), “Maria” (by Novruz Khikmet).
Last years’ experience of Iankovskyi Foundation in conducting this business-lunch in Cannes has proven the efficiency of such informal communication, which is really helping Ukrainian directors and producers to find partners abroad. As a result – already this year several interesting projects are being realized in Ukraine in co-production with European companies. More and more frequently Ukrainian movies are being made in cooperation with leading producers from Italy, France, Poland, Lithuania, Germany etc.
This year, international producers have noted the significant improvement of Ukrainian project for co-production. Some of them even received invitation to conduct business negotiations during the same business-lunch. Furthermore, all the participants outlined the high level of event organization and the necessity of such gatherings in the future.
It is to be noted, that during the 70th Cannes Film Festival (17-28 May 2017), Ukraine is being represented by its own pavilion at the professional platform - Marché du Film, with motto “Ukraine Is Your Destination”. The pavilion is jointly organized by the State Film Agency of Ukraine, “Molodist” KIFF, Ukrainian Cinema Association, Producer Association of Ukraine, Solar Media Entertainment Company and National Charity Foundation of Igor Iankovskyi “Initiative for the Future”.
