On the 3rd November 2016, the Verkhova Rada’s conference-hall accommodated a round table entitled “Promoting Ukraine in the world through cultural diplomacy and information policies”, jointly organized by Kennan Institute’s office in Kyiv and Institute of Social and Economic Studies (ISES) and supported by Verkhovna Rada profile Committees. The meeting was attended by founder of the National Charity Foundation “Initiative for the Future” and philanthropist Igor Iankovskyi. The meeting reunited parliamentary deputies, representatives of Ministries of Culture, Foreign Affairs, Information policy, diplomatic representatives of Germany, France and Japan, philanthropists and cultural figures.
The aim of the meeting was to establish a social dialogue on the future of Ukrainian culture, implementation of new approaches to financing the national culture, cultural diplomacy and promotion of Ukrainian causes among foreign audiences.
Intervening on the meeting, Igor Iankovskyi outlined the need of systemic approach in promotion of Ukrainian culture abroad. “Using cultural diplomacy for promotion of our country we have to understand the mode of communication with the world. Perhaps in some cases it is needed to explain further: how exactly this movie was shot, how this piece was created and why it is so significant for Ukrainians. But we also have to keep in mind, that Ukraine is not only cinema and arts, but the innovations”, - philanthropist stated.
In opinion of Igor Iankovskyi, Ukraine has a lot to offer to the world – different start-ups, creative ideas and scientific inventions. “In this way we can show to the whole world that Ukraine means not only war, corruption and borsch (traditional Ukrainian soup) with varenyky (traditional Ukrainian food of cooked dough stuffed). United in our efforts, we will present the giftedness and creativeness of our nation, how good we are with the new ideas”, - pursued he.
By the philanthropist, already in the end of November, the National Charity Foundation “Initiative for the Future” will invite to join its new project – communicational platform that will reunite scientists, businessmen, State officials, inventors and cultural figures to engage the cooperation among them.
Summing up, Igor Iankovskyi has appealed the audience to unite for resolving the common issues of cultural diplomacy abroad. Philanthropist noted the creation of Coordination Council comprising representatives profile parliamentary Committees, ministries, philanthropists, businessmen and cultural figures as an effective tool to create strategic cooperation plan.
The meeting’s attendees noted the importance of Charity Foundations in realization of cultural projects, including international. For instance, the National Charity Foundation “Initiative for the Future” of Igor Iankovskyi has already organized and conducted the “Days of Ukrainian Cinema” in Paris, London, Munich and Amsterdam; the “Days of Ukrainian Cinema” in Budapest start in a few days. For the last four (4) years the Foundation continuously supports the visits of Ukrainian delegations to the world-famous film festivals, such as Cannes, Berlinale, Karlovy Vary.
