More than 250 film producers from 70 countries came together to the Dining Hall of Berlin city House of Representatives, located in the historic building of Prussian Landtag (Parliament) close to famous Potsdamer Platz, to meet their Ukrainian colleagues. Co-Production Market is a special industrial program as an integral part of Berlin Film Festival that is annually gathering some 600 film producers, who have experience in international film production cooperation.
For the first time ever, Ukraine was represented in this program on such a scale. In addition to the business lunch, visited by twenty Ukrainian film producers seeking for the partners abroad, Pylyp Illienko, Head of the State Film Agency of Ukraine, held a presentation of Ukraine’s film production possibilities for international participants at Co-Production Market.
Commenting on this event, Igor Iankovskyi, businessman and patron, noted that for the sixth consecutive year his Foundation is promoting Ukrainian film industry abroad.
«Several years ago, we have established a good tradition to held «Meet Ukrainian Producers» business lunches every year at Cannes International Film Festival, France. These events have proved to be rather successful. And now, in Germany, for the first time ever, on behalf of Ukraine, we have held meeting of professionals at world’s largest Berlin Film Festival.
Previously, we have already supported the work of Ukrainian national stand on the European film market. We were also holding Ukrainian parties, were bringing young filmmakers to Berlinale. Business lunch at Co-Production Market – is the new step towards Ukrainian film industry development that has begun to demonstrate its substantial growth» - Iankovskyi Igor Mykolaiovych, businessman and patron, said.
Considering the unprecedented activity level of Ukrainian filmmakers at the 68th Berlinale, Pavlo Rozenko, Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, has arrived in the capital city of Germany, took part in business lunch, familiarized himself with the work of Ukrainian national stand on the European film market, and visited the world premiere of Ukrainian-Polish-Macedonian film by Marysia Nikitiuk «When the Trees Fall».
«In 2018 the state has added another half a billion to contribute to the development of films. A total of UAH one billion is steered into Ukrainian film industry. And here, in Berlin, we want to show that Ukraine is able to offer new cooperation opportunities, it may take its rightful place in global film production. I strongly believe that our generation is witnessing the renaissance of Ukrainian filmmaking, and our collaboration is the shape of triangle: president, parliament, and film industry will obtain the highest possible results» - Pavlo Rozenko, Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, said.
Summarizing the results of the work of Ukrainian delegation at the 68th Berlin Film Festival, Pylyp Illienko, Head of the State Film Agency of Ukraine, said that 2017 was the watershed year for the Ukrainian film industry on its the path to the recovery. 47 films were made with the support of State Film Agency of Ukraine only, about one third of them were made in cooperation with foreign partners.
«For the first time in the years since Independence we got decent autumn season of film premieres. All Ukrainian released films were successful and proved to be competitive with foreign films. Our films are being awarded at international film festivals. Now this success shall be consolidated and developed. Therefore, it is so important to draw attention of foreign film producers to the possibilities of our film industry. It is the first time we are holding so major and so important event in Berlin. Indeed, it is prestigious to hold business lunch at Berlinale, since Co-Production Market is the most effective instrument to find partners. And this is not about financial participation only, it is about recognition of our country as an interesting and proactive partner for the further cooperation» - Pylyp Illienko said.
Ukraine was represented at Berlin Film Festival on the European Film Market by the national stand «#UkraineISYourDestination», organized by the State Film Agency of Ukraine and Film Industry Association of Ukraine (FIAU) supported by Ukrainian film producers. Moreover, Ukrainian party at Berlinale was also held and was of great interest to film festival visitors.
